Government’s Vessel Replacement Actions 6 Years Overdue

rssRSS | rssexpand | rsscollapse

The Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to hear that Government is requesting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the construction of a replacement ferry for the Fogo Change Islands ferry – Capt. Earl Windsor. A consultation report from BMT Fleet Technology Ltd. was submitted to government in March 2006 in which it was recommended the Windsor’s replacement be considered a priority! Here we are 6 years later and government is finally taking action to have the ferry replaced with another 2 -3 years before the new vessel will be close to being available to replace the Windsor! Chamber President, Darrin Murray, stated: “Government has issued EOIs for design of a new replacement ferry since 2009. And in 2009 the contract was awarded…what happened with that?” Mr. Murray went on to say: “Had action been taken back in 2009 a new ferry for the Fogo/Change Islands run would be a reality and the residents and businesses of the Islands wouldn’t be facing the crisis they have today!” Why does it take a crisis situation as we have ongoing currently with vessel breakdowns to get things moving AGAIN. Fogo and Change Islands are noted as tourist destinations within the Province by both resident and non-resident visitors and with the upcoming tourism season fast approaching and the growing economic developments on the Island it is imperative to have a reliable service to meet with the demands of all users. During these peak periods the Chamber is calling on Government to add an extra shift ferry to handle this traffic increase with a “load and go” schedule. It is absolutely necessary that additional runs be added to maintain services for the regular residential and commercial traffic along with the increased visitor traffic.Media Contact: Darrin Murray, President Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce 709-290-5026 or 256-7110
