Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce Aviation Dollars
2014 Aviation Dollar Monocoupe 90A

The first pilot to attempt a trans-Atlantic crossing from Gander, Charles Backman, was the pilot of a tiny Monocoupe 90A, outfitted with a larger fuel tank. While the crossing was unsuccessful, and Backman was never seen again after taking off from Gander, the event is nonetheless a fitting symbol of Gander's role in aviation history. Before the Newfoundland Airport's construction, powered flight was still the domain of barnstormers and adventurers. Charles Backman could be seen as among the last of the true adventurers to tackle the North Atlantic; the construction of the Newfoundland Airport enabled development of safe and reliable trans-Atlantic flight.
