Silent Witnesses Memorial

Located eastbound on the Trans Canada Highway approximately four kilometers from Gander, this memorial was erected to honor the 256 people who lost their lives in the 1985 Arrow Air crash. The statue depicts an American Soldier and two children, a boy and a girl, all surrounded by the trees, hills and rocks that are the “silent witnesses” to this disaster. The sculpture was designed by Lorne Rostotski from St. John’s and sculpted by Stephen Sheilds of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Also on site is the cross of sacrifice which bares the inscription “rendezvous with destiny” (the motto of the 101st Airborne) and was crafted from remains of the crashed plane. 256 trees were planted around this cross to represent the 256 crash victims.
